| Washington, District of Columbia - The United States is the richest, most powerful country in the world.
It should be able to respond to a natural disaster like Hurricane Katrina better than any other nation on Earth.
But while thousands suffer in New Orleans, president George Bush seems to have stood idly by and let a disaster descend into anarchy.
Thousands of victims need to be rescued. They don't have water, food or adequate medical attention.
Corpses lie by the side of the road as looters and murderers roam the streets.
Even poor, faraway countries such as Sri Lanka have offered aid, clearly realising the seriousness of the problem quicker than the president of the United States.
When Bush first entered the White House, he didn't want to have any foreign policy and was intent on concentrating on home affairs.
September 11 changed all that and now he seems happier bombing Iraq than looking over his own backyard.
If this disaster had hit New York,Washington or Texas you can be sure he would have got his finger out.
When a hurricane hit the state where Bush's brother Jeb is governor, Florida, he couldn't have been quicker at sending aid.
But when disaster hits three poor states in the south - Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi - it doesn't register on Bush's radar.
How can we believe this man cares about the welfare of Iraqis when he doesn't seem to give two hoots for his own people?
How can he lecture the world about democracy and freedom when aid goes to help states run by the Bush family but doesn't go to others?
Hurricane Katrina is the biggest natural disaster the US has faced.
And George Bush looks like the biggest one to hit the White House since Nixon |
