There have been plenty of negatives from George W. Bush's presidency - a disastrous war, a damaged economy, exploding government debt and assaults on the U.S. Constitution - but, as my mom used to say, it's always important to look for the positives. And here is one: At no time in my three decades in Washington have I seen more common purpose between honest American journalists and patriotic U.S. intelligence analysts. By trampling on a principle that both groups hold dear - respect for the truth - Bush has pushed these historic adversaries together.

The Very Annoying Washington Post

One of the many annoyances about living in George W. Bush's Washington is to read the commentaries about the Iraq War on the editorial pages of the Washington Post. Possibly never in modern times has a major newspaper been more wrong, more consistently with more arrogance than has the Post on this vital issue. Beyond getting almost nothing right - from the Post's certitude over Iraq's WMD to its reverence for Colin Powell's U.N. testimony to its excitement over the purple-ink elections to its enthusiasm over whatever latest corner has been turned - the Post also has this obnoxious tendency to mock Americans who don't share the paper's wisdom.

Stop the false religious slurs against Obama

Those who promote such slurs against Obama believe that they can destroy him by falsely claiming that he's a Muslim

The religious slurs against Sen. Barack Obama must stop. So, too, the insinuation that to be Muslim, which Obama is not, is somehow a disqualification for president. Yet, why do some Americans promote this big lie? The answer is obvious: They believe that by falsely proclaiming that Obama is a Muslim, they can destroy him. On "60 Minutes," Steve Kroft asked Sen. Hillary Clinton if she believed that Obama was a Muslim, Clinton answered: "No, no, there is nothing to base that on, as far as I know." Why such a vague reply? Why didn't she say the truth: "I know for certain that Sen. Obama is a Christian; we have attended many White House prayer breakfasts together." How refreshing it would have been had Clinton added: "Even if Barack had been a Muslim, which he is not, what difference would it make? This is America; we respect people of all faiths, no matter where they pray, whether in a church, a synagogue or a mosque."

Lenders pull out of mortgage deals

Lenders are frantically withdrawing many of their mortgage offers - sometimes with less than an hour's warning - as severe funding constraints mean that they are unable to meet demand for the most competitive deals. ...The root of the problem is unprecedented volatility in the mortgage markets. In the past lenders would typically have given at least a few days' notice before they withdrew rates. But some are now choosing to give little or no notice so as to avoid a last-minute stampede from borrowers desperate to secure the best deal.

Repeatedly comparing the implementation of a cross-border trucking plan to the sanctioning of torture, a U.S. Senator took the Bush administration to task Tuesday -- emphasizing "there will be consequences" for defying the will of Congress. "I would say we don't want to make a federal case out of this, but that's why we're here. The fact is, the U.S. Congress passes appropriation bills, we fund the Department of Transportation, and we fully expect the DOT comply with the funding requirements," Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.) said, early-on in a hearing before the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation.

FORECLOSURE DATA DEEPLY DISTURBING

Chairman Dodd of the Committee U S Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs responds to report on mortgage delinquencies

Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs, today released the following statement on data released by the Mortgage Bankers Association on mortgage delinquencies reported in the fourth quarter of 2007: "The data released this morning on the number of delinquent mortgage loans and foreclosures is deeply disturbing, and underscores the need for aggressive, innovative solutions to the unprecedented challenges we are facing in the housing market. Particularly troubling, although not surprising, is that many of these loans originated in the subprime market, where predatory lending practices victimized homeowners. In fact, data released by the Fed today showed that for the first time on record, homeowners in the aggregate own less than half of the value of their homes. As our economy continues to slow, it is not going to get any easier for homeowners to make their mortgage payments while keeping pace with the rising costs of fuel, food, and other necessities. Put simply, these people need help now - not just "Hope Now." Unfortunately, the Administration, whose lax oversight led to this crisis, has put only a flimsy plan in place that fails to offer enough of either. I am committed to doing everything in my power as Chairman to help these individuals, and to ensure we have the safeguards in place to prevent this situation from occurring again."

Please investigate the foreclosures in California, Ohio and in other states. For decades America's public officials, lobbyists and political candidates have been telling select audiences that blacks, Hispanics, immigrants, single parents, the disabled - many of who are veterans, and the seniors are by far the most frequent targets of foreclosure scams. Foreclosure industry lawyers and lobbyists use this tragic information to persuade fellow lawmakers to vote for deceptive foreclosure enabling laws and to fool the public and the reporters listening to the government's televised hearings. Political candidates parroted this suffering while falsely promising to protect the "weakest and most vulnerable in our midst".

Britain's media fashions its "warrior prince"

Rarely has the servility of the British media been given such free and full expression. The dispatch of Prince Harry--third in line to the British throne after his father, Charles, and elder brother, William--to Afghanistan's Helmand province was as naked a piece of political propaganda as could be imagined. Orchestrated by the Ministry of Defence (MOD), it was carried out with the compliance of every single newspaper and TV channel in the UK. All the major news outlets throughout the world were also part of the conspiracy to deceive the public, with both CNN and Reuters publicly admitting their complicity. When the story finally broke, it did so only as a result of an article published in an Australian magazine, New Idea, whose editors said they were unaware of the worldwide media embargo. It was then the subject of a short article in the German daily tabloid Berliner Kurier and finally made known to a wider audience when it was picked up by the right-wing Internet news-aggregator site, the Drudge Report, on February 28.

Israel mounts bloody offensive against Gaza

In the last few days, Israel has mounted a massive offensive against the political leadership of Hamas and its military wing as well as the civilian population of Gaza. The attacks, claiming the lives of over 100 Palestinians, including many civilians, presage a full scale aerial bombardment and a possible ground invasion. Israeli officials are already describing the conflict with Gaza as a "war".Early Sunday morning, Israel's air force demolished the office of Hamas Prime Minister, Ismail Haniyeh, in Gaza City, wounding five people, and hit seven weapons depots in northern Gaza, killing five militants. While the office was empty at the time of the air strike, there was no mistaking its message to the Hamas leadership--the same given to Yasser Arafat in April 2002 when his Ramallah compound was demolished--that nothing but total submission to Israel's diktats will suffice. It was one of a dozen targets of a dawn raid by the Israel air force.

In both raw figures and as a percentage of the population, the US is the world leader in the rate at which it puts its people behind bars. A new report using state-by-state data says a record 2,319,258 Americans were in jail or prison at the start of 2008--one out of every 99.1 adults. The report by the Pew Center on the States also documents record increases in financial outlays for incarceration, with the 50 US states spending more than $49 billion on prisons last year, almost five times more than the $11 billion spent 20 years ago. The statistics in the report reflect a society that, while exporting violence in aggressive wars abroad, metes out parallel punishment on its population at home. These 26 countries, with a combined population of 802.4 million, imprison 1.8 million; the US, with a population of about 300 million, imprisons close to 2.3 million. According to the study, China, with an estimated population of 1.3 billion, has the second highest number of prisoners behind bars, 1.5 million. These extraordinary figures are one reflection of the enormous social contradictions of American society. The United States is the most unequal of any industrialized country and ranks high on every measure of stress, depression, alienation and other social ills. Despite the US's self-declared status as a beacon of democracy and freedom, American capitalism has no humane, rational or progressive response to social problems. Instead, social problems are treated as police matters.
